Warborough & Shillingford Club XI v The Gussets

The Gussets 219-6 dec (Dom Del-Mar 87, Mark Durden-Smith 40)

Warborough & Shillingford Club XI 63
The Gussets won by 156 runs

Following on from their ten-wicket defeat on Wednesday evening, Warborough suffered further humiliation when they lost to the Gussets by 156 runs, their largest reversal since the cup exit at Shipton-under-Wychwood two years ago.

A number of injuries and other absentees forced Warborough to take the field with a rather callow side, including two debutants and three others making their first appearance of the season.

After some heavy rain during the morning, the pitch started wet and remained so during the course of the Gussets innings, which took place in near-constant horizontal drizzle. As the faster bowlers struggled with their footing, the ball skidded through at a comfortable pace and encouraged stroke-play. Aided by half a dozen dropped catches and a host of other fielding errors, the Gussets rocketed along at more than six runs an over as Dom Del-Mar (87) and television presenter Mark Durden-Smith (40) made the most of some friendly change-bowling to add 105 for the fourth wicket in just twelve overs.

The weather improved markedly during the tea interval. With the sun now shining brightly, and the wind still blowing strongly, the pitch started to dry and batting become something of a lottery.

Chasing 220 to win, Warborough lost both openers without a run on the board, and a third wicket with the score at two. Will Bishop, promoted to number three on the occasion of his fifteenth birthday, showed much character and a sound technique as he stemmed the tide for ten overs and was rewarded with his highest senior score for the Club (21). Paul Buckner (23) attempted to coax an excessively long tail through the remaining 27 overs, before being ninth out. The end quickly followed when Philip Somarakis swung heartily across the line with 16 overs still to be negotiated.
